The History Behind The Wolf Man or Werewolf
The story of the werewolf can be traced back to Greek mythology and the word lycanthrope, which was a literal translation from the Greek language, meaning “wolf” from the Greek lukos and “man” from the Greek anthropos. The early mythological creatures were able to shape-shift from man to wolf under the light of the full moon. This was brought on by either a curse or by from a bite by another werewolf.
The early stories of werewolves often speak of the creatures as having super-human abilities, such as extreme strength or heightened senses. Although the werewolf is mainly considered a character from Europe, there are similar creatures found in stories from around the globe, including some in American Native Indian stories.
The Werewolves are still predominant in today’s culture as characters recently featured in the Twilight movies trilogy.
